Why Bother Getting an Accredited Masters in Public Health Program?

It has been estimated that there are more than three hundred academic institutions offering graduate degrees in chosen specialty areas within public health. The concern with these masters in public health programs is the well-being of communities from a medical standpoint. If you are thinking of entering one of these courses, be sure to check for the accreditation of the CEPH.

What is CEPH? How can it benefit you to select exclusively form universities with accreditation? The CEPH or Council on Education for Public Health accredits colleges and their degrees in public health.

Accreditation is vital for students of these programs. It is generally the case that specialized schools for the subject have all their programs accredited together. It is wise to be certain if other levels of the course have also received accreditation.

It is necessary to note that there are different types of accreditation. More focused programs require the CEPH accreditation, while others may not; it is in fact possible to have accreditation of the regional type without the CEPH's to accompany it. Regional accreditation covers the whole school and concentrates on large-scale issues affecting the entire school.

In contrast, the CEPH accreditation is meant to evaluate how well a course can "drill" the needed knowledge for this field into a student. For instance, there are many specialized accreditors that cover education, physical therapy, nursing and many other fields. For public health, it is the CEPH that handles accreditation with approval of the USDE.

The requirements for getting the accreditation differ from one category to the other, with the two categories being accreditation for academies and accreditation for courses. With a school, of course, you are going to have to consider the many courses available in it too. Your average public health academy will give you the choice of any of the primary focus areas for public health.

There are no requirements of multiple concentrations with a program. Even so, a lot of them do provide options for specialization. It must be noted that another difference is in the fact that the institutions are asked to have options for those who wish to get a doctorate in the field.

A CEPH program or university will give you the lessons and training you sorely need to prosper in your field. There are at least five primary foci from which students can pick theirs, including Behavioral Sciences and Health Education. And if you do desire to move beyond the masters, you can do it with the doctor's level studies in these accredited institutions.

These universities offer a great deal of assistance to their students when needed. It is typical for colleges to accept the credits students have stacked up in other colleges, especially if the educational standards are equal. Once everything has been accomplished, the student can take the Public Health Certification test.

There are certain occupations that actually demand CEPH accreditation of their applicants' masters in public health programs. State bodies tend to prefer interns from such courses as well. The colleges with accreditation also tend to offer the best support systems for degree-takers.
